The wife of a former Manchester United star has been granted a divorce, after the judge agreed that the marriage had irretrievably broken down.
Ryan and Stacey Giggs were granted a decree nisi at London’s Central Family Court on Friday.
In the ruling, the document says: “The Judge held that the respondent has behaved in such a way that the petitioner cannot reasonably be expected to live with the respondent.”
A decree nisi can be sought if your partner doesn’t defend your divorce petition. After it has been granted, you have to wait six weeks before you can apply for a decree absolute. This is the legal document which ends your marriage.
The pair, who were married for 10 years and have two children together, were reportedly battling over the £40 million family fortune.
In a hearing earlier this year, the High Court heard how the former football star had made a “special contribution” to the creation of wealth during his marriage.
The Judge said he would not allow reporting of private financial information during litigation, and also said the couple’s children should not be named in any report of proceedings.
“This couple have a significant profile in the media, both nationally and internationally,” the Judge said.
“That they are divorcing, and that their financial remedy proceedings are being pursued in the English courts, are pieces of information already in the public domain, and the publication of that information cannot legitimately be restrained by order.”
